Hawai'i Game Notes | UC Riverside Game Notes (coming soon)
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i baseball squad (19-11, 1-2 BWC) continues its six-game road swing with a three-game Big West set at UC Riverside (12-16, 1-5 BWC), Thursday, April 13 through Saturday, April 15 at the Riverside Sports Complex.
Â
The Rainbow Warriors look to bounce back from a tough finish to the Big West opener in San Luis Obispo, with their sights on resetting a two-game conference skid last weekend at Cal Poly. UH will face the Highlanders for the 15th time and hold a slight lead in the series at 8-6. These teams will play in Riverside for only the fifth time, with UH leading 3-1 on the road, including a series sweep in 2015.
Â
The Highlanders too are on a skid, dropping their last seven games, including a 14-1 Tuesday loss to San Diego. UCR started the season hot, going 10-5, and defeating UCLA with series wins earned against Fresno State and Kansas State – but have since dropped nine of their last 10 outings.
Â
UCR averages 5.0 runs per game on offense, hitting .246 as a team. Back in the starting rotation since the final weekend in March, junior center fielder Mark Contreras is hitting .371 with nine runs and eight RBI, pacing the team with a .443 on-base percentage. Junior shortstop Colby Schultz is hitting .299 with a team-high seven doubles, 11 RBI and 17 runs, while freshman right fielder Cade Peters tops UCR with 18 runs and 14 RBI on a .289 average.
Â
Over the last 10 games, UCR has averaged just 2.6 runs, but opponent scoring has shot up to 8.5 runs per game, leading to a 5.44 staff ERA and overall 6.3-runs allowed average. Although the Rainbow Warrior pitching took a hit last week, UH's pitching staff is at the core of the best start since 2007. The 'Bows remain ranked 31st nationally and third in the league with a 3.30 ERA.
Â
At the plate, UH is hitting at the best rate since 2011, holding steady at a .273 average and 5.4 runs per game. Sophomore catcher
Kekai Rios remains a constant force for UH with a .337 average, collecting eight doubles, 19 runs and 13 RBI, pacing the team with a .446 on-base percentage. UH is looking for more solid production out of junior center fielder
Dylan Vchulek, who is hitting .317 with a team-leading 27 runs as the leadoff hitter, tabbing 15 RBI and a team-high 10 steals.
The Rainbow Warriors and Highlanders will put their talents on display before a national audience, as the Thursday and Friday contests will air live on ESPN3. It is accessible on computers, smartphones, tablets, gaming systems and connected streaming devices through WatchESPN and the ESPN app. The network is currently available nationwide at no additional cost who receive their high-speed Internet connection or video subscription from an affiliated service provider. It is also available at no cost to U.S. college students and U.S.-based military personnel via computers, smartphones and tablets connected to on-campus educational and on-base military broadband and Wi-Fi networks.
