HONOLULU – Another night out at Les Murakami Stadium between the University of Hawai'i and San Francisco, another night locked in a pitcher's duel that ended in extra innings. Just as the night before, UH tied the game to add an extra inning, but a pair of USF runs sealed the game in the 11th.
Â
UH starter
Dominic DeMiero and USF's Thomas Ponticelli sparred for eight complete innings, with the Dons providing a single run in the stretch, a sixth-inning Nico Giarratano home run that granted USF a 1-0 lead into the final inning.
Â
Facing reliever Shane Parker in the ninth, right fielder
Adam Fogel launched a leadoff double to the left field wall, pulling up with an apparent injury at the second bag. His stand-in, pinch runner
Marcus Doi was able to come around for the game-tying score, racing home on pinch hitter
Ethan Lopez' RBI single through the right side.
Â
For the second night in a row, the Rainbow Warriors had an opportunity to close the door on a win in regulation, but stranding runners to go to extras. After tying the game in the ninth, UH loaded up the bases with one out, but a double play ball sent the game to the 10th.
Â
After taking over in the ninth, reliever
Kyle Mitchell guided UH through the 10th, downing six consecutive batters, but a leadoff double in the 11th set the stage for a tough inning. A second runner reached on an error, setting up RBI by Allen Smoot and Michael Perri to move USF to a 3-1 advantage; the game's final margin. While debating the call at the plate on the second run, head coach
Mike Trapasso was ejected from the game.
Â
Hawai'i had scoring opportunities, but had trouble moving runners home. The Rainbow Warriors got runners aboard, earning a base runner in eight innings, but stranded 12 runners on the night.
Â
Mitchell (0-1) takes the loss, throwing 3.0 innings with two hits, two strikeouts and one earned run. Benji Post (1-0) earned the win for USF, going 3.0 innings with just one hit allowed.
Â
The Rainbow Warriors and Dons return to the park for game three with an early start on Saturday, with first pitch slated for 1:05 p.m.
