HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (12-12, 0-0 Big West) was edged out by No. 21 Baylor, 3-2 on Thursday, the second day of the Outrigger Spring Fling Tournament. In the loss, Kanani Aina Cabrales fired a complete game at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
 
Baylor jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a two-run double by Linsey Hays in the top of the first inning.
 
Hawai'i cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the first to trail the Bears, 2-1 after one complete inning. Sarah Muzik led the inning off with an opposite-field triple to left. Later, Keiki Carlos hit a chopper up the middle to drive in Muzik.
 
The Bears' Hays led off the fourth with a solo home run to give Baylor a 3-1 lead.
 
Baylor lifted starter Kendall Potts for reliever Kelsee Selman in the sixth inning. But Selman walked leadoff hitter Muzik who then advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. Muzik then scored on an illegal pitch call to cut Baylor's lead to 3-2. Nicole Lopez then drew another walk and Selman was replaced by Heather Stearns. Stearns plunked Carlos to put runners on first and second and no outs, but then settled down and shut the door on UH, striking out the next three batters to end the inning. Stearns went on to strike out the all three batters in the seventh as well.
 
Aina Cabrales evened her record at 6-6, allowing three runs on eight hits with no walks and two strike outs.
 
Baylor's pitching staff held UH to just three hits. Potts improved to 6-0, allowing one run on three hits with a walk and six strike outs. Selman threw to two batters and Stearns closed the game to earn her third save of the year.
 
Hawai'i continues play in the Outrigger Spring Fling Tournament on Friday as they face North Dakota State at 6:00 p.m. That game follows Baylor vs. California at 1:00 pm and Baylor vs NDSU at 3:30 pm.
