HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team fell to UMKC, 4-1 on Monday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Kanani Aina Cabrales suffered her first loss of the season, dropping her record to 2-1 overall. Hawai'i falls to 4-2 overall while UMKC picked up its first win of the season to improve to 1-5.
The Kangaroos jumped out to an early, 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI-groundout by Katie Kelley and an RBI-single to left by Rachel Pate.
The Rainbow Wahine got one run back to cut their deficit in half, 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning.
Ulu Matagiese reached safely on a single up the middle and later scored on an RBI single to left by
Sarah Muzik.
The Roos, however, extended their lead in the top of the seventh, tacking on two more insurance runs on a suicide squeeze play by Alex Gale and an RBI-single by Brooke Parker to take a 4-1 lead into the last half inning of the game.
Aina Cabrales threw her third complete game of the week. She gave up four runs on seven hits with no walks and three strike outs.
UMKC's Lacie Bullard also threw a complete game, raising her record to 1-1. She allowed just one run on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
Monday's game marked the first collegiate starts for both
Rachael Turner and
Heather Cameron.
Hawai'i will now hit the road for their annual trip to Las Vegas, Nev. where they will play in UNLV's DeMarini Desert Classic, Feb. 18-21.
