VIDEO: HighlightsHONOLULU – The No. 4 University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team swept Hope International University, 25-15, 25-14, 25-14 Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. UH advances to a 16-3, 12-2 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation record.
UH was led by senior
Scott Hartley, who matched Hope's Dominique Blonski for a game-high eight kills. Additionally,
Ryan Leung recorded a career-high six kills for the 'Bows alongside
Brook Sedore,
Taylor Averill and
Kupono Fey, who also added six apiece.
The Rainbow Warriors held a commanding 15-9 lead midway through Set 1, but the Royals pulled off a 5-1 run to follow, cutting UH's lead down to just two points, 17-15. However, the Warriors quickly answered back with eight unanswered points to win the set 25-15.
UH hit at an impeccable .565 throughout Set 2 with 15 kills, two errors and 23 swings as
Ryan Leung,
Zach Radner,
Alex Jones and
Garrett Komisarek stepped into the match. The Warriors stepped off to 15-9 advantage early in the set, and never looked back after footing a six-point run towards a 20-9 lead. The Royals were able to add five more points to follow, but it wasn't enough as Leung finished the set with his third kill of the night, 25-14.
After scoring six unanswered points to open Set 3, the 'Bows gained a 7-3 before the Royals answered back with a 5-2 run to bring themselves within one point at 9-8. However, it wasn't long before the 'Bows slammed back with a 7-0 run fueled by transfer
Vaughn Wellenreiter's back-to-back block assists and first career-kill for a 16-8 advantage. With Hartley as the only starter on the court in the third set, middle-blocker
Zach Radner ended the night with a career-high five blocks.
The Rainbow Warriors will host the Royals again on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center before taking one week off. UH hits the road again March 27 to open the series at UC San Diego, returning to MPSF-play.
