Warrior Tennis Turned Back By No. 41 San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The University of Hawai`i men's tennis team could not come up with the win Saturday against No.41 San Diego, battling closely in every match at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. The Torero's held on for the win, 5-2.

In doubles action, UH's No. 3 duo of Chas Okamoto and Felix Albert beat San Diego's James Ponwith and Patrick Hall 6-1, but the Torero's Jordan Angus and Filip Vittek tied the score with a 6-2 win over UH's Nils Schuhmann and Carter Lam on the No. 1 court. In the deciding match to secure the doubles point, Kai Wehnelt and Marcel Chan gave it their all, but fell short by Romain Kalaydijan and Uros Petronijevic, securing the point for the Toreros.

With the Rainbow Warriors down 2-0, UH's Lam gave the team light with a straight-set win against Torero's Kalaydijan, 6-3, 7-6 (5). Okamoto added to the win column playing in the No. 3 court against Jordan Angus, 6-4, 7-5, cutting the lead for the Torero's 3-2. Unfortunately, it was not enough for the Warriors when Joakim Pinola went into a three-set battle against San Diego's Fitzgerald. Pinola fell 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, to clinch the match for the Toreros.

The Rainbow Warriors will have almost four weeks off before they play in the Pacific Mountain Invitational starting on February 27 and running through March 1. The tournament will be held in Stockton, California.
