ANAHEIM, Calif. – In a roller coaster of a game, the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team dropped a heart-wrenching 87-84 overtime decision to Cal State Northridge in the quarterfinal round of the Big West Tournament Thursday night at the Honda Center.
Stephen Maxwell's banker with 12.2 seconds left in overtime put the Matadors up for good, spoiling the Rainbow Warriors' comeback bid. UH overcame a miserable start – trailing by as much as 16 points – with a phenomenal second half, but couldn't hold onto the leads both late in regulation and in overtime.
Following Maxwell's shot,
Isaac Fotu was called for an illegal screen on UH's ensuing possession. The 'Bows were forced to foul and CSUN's Tre Hale-Edmerson converted both free throws with 7.2 seconds remaining. With one last chance to tie,
Brandon Spearman misfired on a 3-point attempt in the closing seconds.
The Matadors advance to face second-seeded Long Beach State in Friday's semifinals while the 'Bows finish the regular season at 20-11 and will now await to find out its postseason fate.
Christian Standhardinger, who earlier in the week was named to the all-conference first team, ignited a furious comeback spanning both halves, which saw the Rainbow Warriors erase a 16-point first half deficit and build a 13-point lead midway through the second half. Standhardinger finished with 28 points, including 14-of-16 from the free throw line, and in the process set a new single season record for free throws made, breaking Chris Gaines former mark of 184 back in 1989-90.
UH got off to ragged start as an energetic Matador squad jumped all over them. CSUN made 12 of its first 18 shots and built a 16-point lead on a pair of occasions. CSUN shot 60 percent in the first frame and doubled UH up in the paint (20-10). But the 'Bows made a late push, including 10 unanswered points during a 15-5 half-closing run, to cut the deficit to just six, 42-36, at the break.
The Rainbow Warriors continued that momentum in the second half. A
Garrett Nevels 3-pointer at the 14:57 mark gave UH its first lead and was a part of a huge 21-2 run, including 12 straight, that put the 'Bows ahead 61-48 with 10:31 remaining.
UH maintained its double-digit lead until the Matadors scored eight straight in under a minute of elapsed time, including one of Josh Greene's four three-pointers, to pull within four at 68-64 with 4:59 to play.
Hale-Edmerson's lay-up cut UH's lead to 72-71 with 1:50 to play. Both teams traded stops until
Keith Shamburger's pull-up jumper with 21.0 seconds left gave UH a 74-71 lead. But the Matadors came right back and Greene's three-point on the left wing tied the score at 74 with 11.8 seconds left and capped a 17-5 run to close out regulation.
Shamburger scored UH's first five points of overtime and
Quincy Smith's floater gave the 'Bows an 81-78 lead with 1:31 left. Greene answered with yet another trey to tie it at 81 but Shamburger responded with a jumper to put UH back on top with 40.8 seconds left.
After a CSUN miss, Shamburger was fouled and converted one of two free throws. With a three-point lead and just 24 seconds left, UH elected to foul Greene, who made both free throws pulling CSUN to within one at 84-83. On the in-bounds pass, Shamburger was trapped in the corner and stepped out of bounds setting up Maxwell's go-ahead jumper on CSUN's ensuing possession.
Greene finished with 27 points to lead the Matadors (16-17).
Shamburger scored a career-high 20 points while Spearman tied his season-high with 17 points. First-team all-conference forward
Isaac Fotu was held to six points on 3-of-10 shooting.
