HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team got back on the winning track with a 69-60 win over Cal Poly Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. UH improved to 16-7 overall and moved into sole possession of fourth-place in the Big West at 5-4.

After losing five straight in the series against Cal Poly—including a 12-point loss in San Luis Obispo last month—the 'Bows finally broke through against the Mustangs with a strong effort at both ends of the court. With the win UH  remained just two games off the league pace, while handing Cal Poly (8-14, 4-5 BWC) its fourth straight loss.

UH pounded the ball inside, giving the Mustangs a steady diet of Isaac Fotu and Christian Standhardinger. The pair combined for 44 points, including a game-high 26 points for Fotu, who shot 10-of-13 from the floor. Standhardinger, meanwhile, registered his seventh double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Defensively, UH held the Mustangs to just 39 percent shooting for the game and held leading scorer and all-Big West forward Chris Eversley to just two points and zero field goals made.

Cal Poly controlled the pace early on, but UH eventually ramped it up. The 'Bows went on a 13-4 run late in the half and eventually took a 32-24 lead into the break. Fotu scored UH's first six points of the second half and the Rainbow Warriors eventually built it's lead to as many as 11 with 13 minutes to play.

The Mustangs made a run at UH, cutting the deficit to 52-51 on a Anthony Silvestri three-pointer with seven minutes to play. But the 'Bows would not be denied as Fotu capped a 10-2 run with a rebound and put-back to give UH the cushion it would need to take home the win.

The Rainbow Warriors absolutely owned the paint, where they doubled up the Mustangs, 40-20 in points. UH went to the free-throw line 27 times, compared to just eight for Cal Poly and also controlled the boards, 48-22, getting 10 combined from key bench contributors Davis Rozitis and Aaron Valdes.

The Rainbow Warriors next head to Southern California for a pair of road games at UC Riverside (Feb. 13, 7:00 p.m. PT) and Cal State Fullerton (Feb. 15, 6:00 p.m. PT).
