Men’s Basketball Bounces Back Versus UC Davis

Box Score | Box Score (pdf)

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i men's basketball team got its mojo back on offense in an 86-77 win over UC Davis Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Warriors improved to 19-8 overall and 8-5 in the Big West with their fourth win in their last five contests.

Two nights after being held to a season-low 56 points and 29 percent shooting in a defensive slugfest versus UC Irvine, UH got back on track offensively, led by its potent frontcourt of Christian Standhardinger of Isaac Fotu both of whom notched double-doubles. Standhardinger finished with 29 points—two short of his career-high—and added 11 revbounds, while  Fotu posted his second straight double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Corey Hawkins, the league's second-leading scorer who burned UH for 40 points in Honolulu last season, again had a hot hand, finishing with 29 points.  But it wasn't nearly enough for a short-handed Aggie (8-19, 3-9 BWC) squad that dropped its fourth straight game.

UH got off to a fast start and never looked back. The 'Bows buried nine of their first 11 shots from the field to take a double-digit lead eight minutes in. UH remained in control from that point on. The Rainbow Warriors took a 44-31 lead into the locker room while shooting a scorching 58 percent and getting a combined 29 points from Standhardinger and Fotu.

The 'Bows built its lead to as many as 18 points early in the second half and maintained a double-digit lead nearly the rest of the way. UC Davis cut the deficit to seven points with 39 seconds left but it was too-little, too-late as the Rainbow Warriors completed a season sweep of the Aggies.

Garrett Nevels added 13 points for UH, Brandon Spearman finished with 10 points and Keith Shamburger dished out eight assists.

UH, which remains in fourth-place but just 1.5 games behind first, will now play its next two games on the road, beginning with a match-up at Long Beach State on Thursday, Feb. 27. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. PT (5:30 p.m. HT).
