VIDEO: Young & Shamburger Buzzer-Beaters
IRVINE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team captured its biggest win yet during its brief history in the Big West with a 90-86 overtime victory at UC Irvine before a stunned sellout crowd at the Bren Center on Saturday night. UH improved to 14-5 overall and 3-2 in the Big West with its third straight win.
The Anteaters (13-8, 4-1 BWC), the preseason league favorite, entered the game undefeated in the Big West and on a season-long six-game win streak. That all came to a halt thanks to a full-throttle effort by the Rainbow Warriors who overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half.
The second-half rally was punctuated by a dramatic leaning three-pointer by
Keith Shamburger at the end of regulation to propel the game into overtime. Shamburger also sealed the game with three free throws down the stretch in overtime and finished with 17 points and a UH-career high 11 assists.
In a clash of the best offensive team in the Big West, versus the best defensive team, it was the Rainbow Warriors' potent scoring that came out on top. UH has now scored 90 or more points in each of its last three wins and for the second straight game was carried by its starters, who scored the entirety of the squad's points.
Leading the way was
Isaac Fotu, who put together a career scoring night. The sophomore forward finished with 30 points on 13-of-16 shooting, while adding six rebounds.
Garrett Nevels also came up big with 19 points, including the go-ahead jumper with a minute remaining in overtime.
Christian Standhardinger had 14 points and seven rebounds, while
Brandon Spearman chipped in 10 points for the 'Bows.
UH got off to a blazing start in the game, hitting its first eight shots to build a early double-digit lead. But the Anteaters responded and used a crucial 15-2 run late in the first half that turned the tide of the game and gave them a 43-38 lead at the break.
UCI maintained that lead for the majority of the second half and held a 10-point advantage on a pair of occasions midway through the second half. But UH wouldn't back down and continued to chip away to set up a dramatic final possession in which Shamburger hit a leaning three-pointer at the top of the key with two UCI defenders draped on him.
Once in overtime, UH again refused to fold. UCI took an 86-83 lead with 2:19 remaining. But UH ended on a 7-0 run and held the Anteaters—who shot 55 percent for the game—without a point during the final stretch.
Facing the biggest team in the league, UH was out-scored 52-20 in the paint, but held their own on the boards, out-rebounding the Anteaters, 32-24. UH also managed to get to the foul line where it buried 20 of their 26 attempts. The win completed a rare road sweep for the Bows who defeated UC Davis, 90-73, on Thursday.
The Rainbow Warriors now return to Honolulu for four straight home games beginning with a showdown against Long Beach State on Thursday, Jan. 30. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
