Game Notes
HONOLULU—The No. 19/23 University of Hawai'i softball team (38-10, 15-3 Big West) host its final home series of the season against UC Santa Barbara (28-21, 9-9 BWC). Saturday will be "Senior Day" for five Rainbow Wahine—
Tara Anguiano,
Brynne Buchanan,
Jessica Iwata,
Kelly Majam and
Kaia Parnaby. Saturday will also be “Power in Pink” day to recognize breast cancer awareness.
The 2013 softball season is in its home stretch and the 'Bows continue to lead the Big West with a 15-3 conference record, but they will have stiff competition in its final two series against fourth-place UCSB and third-place Pacific on the road in Stockton, Calif. But whether or not Hawai'i can re-gain its swagger to capture its second Big West crown and sixth conference championship is in their hands as the season winds down. The 'Bows are coming off its first conference series home loss since 2011 and the mercy rule loss in the series finale was the first at home since 2009. But the 'Bows are looking to bounce back against the visiting Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara.
Freshman right fielder
Keiki Carlos and junior
Jazmine Zamora lead UH at the plate with a .333 average. Carlos who has started in 47 games this season is 49-for-147 at the plate with a team-high 13 doubles and four triples. She also has crossed the plate 27 times and driven in 28 runs. Zamora has started the last 41 games at second base and has proven herself on offense, hitting 44-for-132 with seven doubles and 20 RBI. Majam is third on the team with a .329 batting average. She leads the team and the league with 53 runs scored, 17 home runs and 37 walks. Majam set a new UH record with her 45th career double in the opener against Long Beach State. Her 71 career home runs ties her for ninth all-time in NCAA DI history with Holly Tankersley (La-Lafayette – 2005-08) and Stephanie Best (UCF – 2002-05).
This senior class currently has the best four-year winning percentage in school history at 76.8% with a 169-51 overall record while in conference games, these five seniors have gone 66-14 for a staggering 82.5 winning-percentage. Last year's 2012 senior class previously had held the overall mark at 71.2%.
Anguiano, a senior shortstop from Whittier, Calif., has seen action in 20 games this year and is hitting a career-high .240 at the plate (6-for-25) and she cranked her first career home run in Las Vegas, Nev. earlier this year against San Jose State (Feb. 15). Buchanan, UH's senior rightfielder from Thousand Oaks, Calif., has started in a career-high 43 games this season—23 in rightfield and 20 in leftfield. She is hitting career-high .265 (27-for-102) with 24 runs scored and two doubles.
The senior triumvirate of Iwata, Majam and Parnaby have etched their names throughout UH's single-season and career records as three of the most prolific players to ever don the Hawai'i jersey. Iwata, an All-American senior from Lihu'e, Kaua'i, is the UH career record holder with 193 RBI and is ranked No. 2 with 53 home runs, 44 doubles, and 98 walks; No. 3 with 173 runs scored; and No. 4 all-time with a career .357 batting average.
Majam—an All-American senior from Pine Valley, Calif.—also has her name firmly cemented throughout the UH annals. She is UH's career leader with 71 home runs, 223 runs scored, 45 doubles and 153 walks. Majam is also No. 4 with 227 hits and No. 5 with 146 RBI and even though her career was hampered by a season-ending injury as a true freshman as well as a battle with thyroid cancer after her rookie season, Majam has started in all of UH's 222 straight games over her four-year career. Together in four years, the dynamic duo of Iwata and Majam have accounted for 31.8% (114-of-358) of UH's home runs; 30.3% (402-of-1325) of the 'Bows runs scored; and 28.0% (339-of-1209) of Hawai'i's RBI to this point of the season.
Parnaby—an all-conference pitcher from Bilgola Plateau, New South Wales, Australia—has had one of the most stunning single-seasons in UH pitching history. After spending the last three years behind ace All-American
Stephanie Ricketts, Parnaby has established a name for herself, becoming UH's winningest single-season pitcher and the leader in NCAA DI this year with 34 wins. Currently she is also No. 2 in the school record books with 301 strike outs—23 shy of tying fellow Aussie southpaw and former UH All-American Brooke Wilkins' UH record of 324 K's in 1994. Parnaby has also quickly risen in UH's career record books, she is No. 2 overall with 753 strike outs; No. 2 with five saves, No. 3 with 30 shut outs and 81 wins; and No. 4 with 83 complete games.
UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (28-21, 9-9 Big West)
The Gauchos come to Honolulu as the fourth place team in the conference with a 9-9 BWC record. The are coming off a 2-1 series win over Cal State Northridge, in which they edged the Matadors 6-5 in the rubber game. UCSB has one two BWC series over UC Davis and most recently Cal State Northridge. The Gauchos have not been swept by any Big West opponent this year, getting at least one game against every team they've played thus far this year.
Jessica Soria leads UCSB with a .327 average and 35 runs scored—she also is the team's speedster with 22-of-27 stolen bases. Shelby Wisdom is second on the team with a .315 average with team-highs of 12 doubles, seven home runs, and 39 RBI. Ariana Palomares is the third player hitting over .300 at .306. She is 45-of-147 with nine doubles.
In the circle, Wisdom is also their leading pitcher with a 15-14 record overall with 15 complete games and four shut outs in 164.1 innings pitched. She has a 2.90 ERA with 119 strike outs and 56 walks. Alex Pingree has done well posting a 1.92 ERA with a 7-4 record in 91.0 innings of work. She has fanned 34 batters while walking just 18.
