Women’s Water Polo Rolls Past Michigan

Box Score

HONOLULU – The No. 8 University of Hawai'i women's water polo team treated its fans to rousing victory in its 2013 home opener as it took down No. 18 Michigan, 9-3, on Wednesday night.

After playing its first 11 matches on the mainland, the Rainbow Wahine finally hit the pool at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. It took UH (7-5) nearly a full quarter to get on the scoreboard, but once they did the flood gates open.

Senior Monika Eggens tallied UH's first three goals of the match as the Rainbow Wahine led from wire to wire. Eggen's finished with a match-high four goals for her seventh hat trick in just 12 matches this year.

Eggens got UH on the board at the 1:49 mark of the first quarter and added another goal a little more than a minute later. Kiki Golden scored for Michigan (4-10) in the waning seconds to make it 2-1 at the end of the opening period.

But then Eggens kicked off a string of six unanswered goals by UH as the Rainbow Wahine took a 6-1 lead at the half and an 8-1 advantage late into the third quarter.

It was a more-than-enough cushion for Rainbow Wahine who got a season-high nine saves from junior goalkeeper Amy Carlson. Five different players scored for the Rainbow Wahine.

The Rainbow Wahine next return to the road where they will play a pair of Big West road matches at UC Irvine (March 14) and Long Beach State (March 15).
