Water Polo Defeats UC San Diego; Falls To Stanford

Box Score - UCSD
Box Score - Stanford

HONOLULU – The No. 8 University of Hawai'i women's water polo split a pair of non-conference home matches with a 9-6 win over No. 15 UC  San Diego and a 17-5 loss to No. 2 Stanford Saturday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. UH moved to 13-9 on the season with the split.

Less than 24 hours after a disappointing loss to San Diego State, the Rainbow Wahine bounced back in their first match of the day against the Tritons (14-11), though it wasn't easy. It was a tightly contested match for much of three quarters until the Rainbow Wahine pulled away late in the match.

Six different Rainbow Wahine got in the scoring column, led by Monika Eggens three goals. It was the senior's 14th hat trick of the season.

It was back-and-forth match with neither team leading by more than a goal, until late in the third quarter. The game was locked 4-4 at half and 5-5 with a little more than two minutes left in the third. But UH got consecutive goals by Eggens and Caitly Lopes da Silva to take a two-goal cushion into the final quarter.

UCSD cut the lead to one early in the fourth, but the Rainbow Wahine tacked on the final two goals of the match. Amy Carlson notched a season-high 11 saves in goal to help preserve the win.

In the evening session, the Rainbow Wahine were simply overpowered by a Stanford squad that sports three Olympic gold medalists. One of those medalists, Maggie Steffens—the 2012 FINA Player of the Year—led seven different Cardinal scorers with four goals. The 17 goals were the most UH has given up this year.

Stanford (22-1) scored the first four goals of the match and led 9-3 at the break before coasting to its 10th straight win. It was UH's second loss to the Cardinal this year. The Rainbow Wahine also fell to Stanford, 13-5, in the UC Irvine Invitational on Feb. 23

The Rainbow Wahine next head to the road for a pair of Big West matches at UC Davis (April 5) and Pacific (April 6).
