HONOLULU – The No. 8 University of Hawai'i women's water polo suffered its first Big West loss with a 10-7 setback to No. 6 San Diego State Friday night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 12-8 overall and 3-1 in the Big West.
Despite the match being tied at halftime, the Aztecs (20-7, 4-1 Big West) controlled the majority of the match and never trailed in the first meeting between the teams as conference rivals. SDSU scored three unanswered goals at the beginning of each half and out-scored the Rainbow Wahine 5-1 in the pivotal third quarter to pull out their ninth straight win.
Amber Pezolla led the Aztecs with five goals. UH got another hat trick from
Monika Eggens—her 13
th of the season—but it wasn't enough for the Bows. UH also got a pair of goals from freshman
Paula Chillida Esforzado.
For the second straight night, the Rainbow Wahine got off to a sluggish start as the Aztecs jumped out to 3-0 lead. UH, however, roared back and pulled to a 4-4 tie after shutting the Aztecs out in the second quarter.
SDSU, however, overwhelmed UH in the third quarter. The Aztecs scored three straight to open the half—including a pair by Pezolla—part of 5-1 run in the period that helped put the game out of reach.
Rachel Mitchell tallied 11 saves for the Aztecs, while
Amy Carlson had seven for UH.
The Rainbow Wahine wrap up the weekend's action with a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday. UH will face UC San Diego at 10:30 a.m., before taking on Stanford at 5:00 p.m.
