HONOLULU—The No. 20/23 University of Hawai`i softball team (19-5, 0-0 Big West) did just enough to defeat Utah (13-8-1) in extra innings, 1-0 on Wednesday night on the first day of the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament. Senior southpaw Kaia Parnaby won her 14th straight game with her eighth shut out of the season and UH scored the winning run off a single to third by Alyssa Villalpando for UH's eighth straight win.

It marked Parnaby's third one-hitter in the last four games. She fired her 18th complete game of the season and surpassed her entire win total from last season with her 17th win of 2013. She threw 8.0 innings with one walk and eight strike outs and faced just 27 batters.

In the second inning, Hawai`i threatened to score when the first two runners reached safely with no outs on an error an Iwata grounder to short and a hard-hit single up the middle by Leisha Li`ili`i. But UH was held off the scoreboard as Utah got a pair of fielder's choices to eliminate the lead runner at third and Utah got a strike out to end the rally.

Hawai`i got some defensive gems to end the sixth and seventh inning. Kelly Majam made diving catch running in towards the field for the third out and Jazmine Zamora also made a diving stop on her glove hand side and made the throw to first from her knees to end the seventh.

In the top of the eighth inning, and the international tie-breaker in place, the runner was placed at second base to start the frame. Parnaby was clutch as she fanned the three batters she faced in a row, not allowing the runner to advance to third.

In the bottom of the eighth, Sharla Kliebenstein was placed on second. She moved to third on a perfect sacrifice bunt executed by Jazmine Zamora. Kliebenstein then scored off an Alyssa Villalpando groundball to third that ticked off the third baseman's glove and caromed into foul territory for the 1-0 win.

Hawai`i continues play in the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament on Thursday. The 'Bows will battle No. 5/4 California at 6:00 p.m.
