Water Polo Opens UCI Invite Splitting Two

IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 9 University of Hawai'i women's water polo team (6-3, 0-0 Big West) split a pair of matches Saturday afternoon on the first day of the UC Irvine Invitational. UH defeated No. 8 San Jose State, 11-9 but later fell to Stanford 13-5 at the Corona del Mar pool.

The Rainbow Wahine began the morning with a shaky start, lagging one point behind the Spartans 5-3 at halftime. However, UH sprung back in the third to outscore SJSU five goals to three, squeezing in a 9-8 lead going into the final quarter.

At the end the Rainbow Wahine hung on for an 11-9 victory after outscoring the Spartain's 2-1 in the fourth. Senior Amarens Genee led UH with a hat trick while Hannah Hogue recorded nine saves in the goal.

In the afternoon Stanford held UH to no goals going into halftime with a 7-0 lead. The Rainbow Wahine were able to find the net in the second half but only scored five to the Cardinal's 13 and were unable to come back for an upset.

Monique Wilson scored two of the Rainbow Wahine's five goals, while Amy Carlson recorded five saves in the goal.

UH opens the final day of the UCI Invite first thing in the morning in a match against San Diego State.
