HENDERSON, Nev.—The No. 20/23 University of Hawai'i softball team (8-3, 0-0 Big West) defeated Utah Valley (5-5, 0-0 PCSC), 3-1 on the final day of the Easton Desert Classic. In UH's first game of their doubleheader,
Kaia Parnaby earned the win with a complete-game effort and was aided by a pair of solo home runs by
Sharla Kliebenstein and
Alyssa Villalpando.
Parnaby (6-2) gave up one run on six hits with one walk and seven strike outs. It was her seventh complete game of the season.
UH scored one run in the top of the first inning.
Kelly Majam led the game off with a walk. After a strike out, Majam moved to second on a single to left by
Keiki Carlos.
Jessica Iwata then drove in Majam from second with a single to left to give UH the early, 1-0 lead.
UVU answered right back in the bottom of the first, knotting the score at 1-1. Morgan Summers led the home half with a triple to rightfield. Marie Williams followed with a bunt single to put runners at the corners and Amanda Robinson followed with an RBI single to right to score Summers from third.
Hawai'i's
Alyssa Villalpando then led the second inning off with her first career home run to leftfield to give UH a 2-1 advantage.
Brynne Buchanan then doubled to centerfied, but Majam lined into a double play – L4U for two quick outs.
Kliebenstein then launched her third home run of the tournament to left-centerfield in the top of the third. It was her 24th home run of her career.
Wolverine starting pitcher Josi Summers took the loss, giving up three runs on six hits with two walks and three strike outs. Tiffany Mills closed the game, throwing the final 3.1 scoreless innings. She had three strike outs and two walks.
Hawai`i will now face Nevada in their final game of the Easton Desert Classic hosted by UNLV at 1:30
