HONOLULU – The new-look University of Hawai'i men basketball team raced to a 101-85 win over BYU-Hawai'i in an exhibition game Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. In their first and only exhibition game of the year, the Rainbow Warriors excited fans with an up-and-down pace in defeating the Division II Seasiders.
UH was led by a combination of old and new.
Christian Standhardinger—last year's leading scorer—led the way with 27 points while adding six rebounds. Meanwhile, junior college transfer
Garrett Nevels dazzled fans with 24 points including nine straight points during a key run in the first half. After redshirting last year,
Keith Shamburger took the reins at point and dished out a game-high 11 assists.
All 14 players who suited up saw action for the Rainbow Warriors, though the mood was subdued as starting guard
Brandon Spearman exited just seconds into the game due to injury. Spearman's replacement,
Aaron Valdes finished with eight points, three assists and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Rainbow Warriors were down 27-26 midway through the first half, but spurred by their pressure defense went on a 21-6 run to take control of the game. The 'Bows, who tallied eight steals in the first half—took a 51-41 lead into the locker room as Standhardinger and Nevels each tallied 14 points.
UH built its lead to as many as 22 points in the second half, giving its reserves a good amount of playing time. Hawai'i shot 52 percent from the floor, while finishing with 15 steals for the game. UH also held a 45-36 advantage on the backboards.
UH will officially open the 2013-14 regular season against Tennessee State on Friday, Nov. 8 in the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Rainbow Classic.
