HONOLULU--The University of Hawai`i softball team held their first full practice of the fall season on Monday. The Rainbow Wahine return 13 letterwinners from last year's squad which captured the program's second Big West title and sixth overall conference crown and advanced to its 11th NCAA Tournament in UH history. Leading the 'Bows in to battle this season are five returnees who earned Big West honors last year--outfielder
Keiki Carlos (So., 5-3, Mililani, O`ahu); first baseman Leisha Li`ili`i (Jr., 5-11, Kane`ohe, O`ahu), catcher/designated player
Kayla Wartner (5-6, Jr., Escondido, Calif.); second baseman
Jazmine Zamora (5-3, Sr., Temecula, Calif.), and utility player
Sharla Kliebenstein (5-8, Jr., Oceanside, Calif.).
Joining the 2014 softball team are 11 newcomers who are looking to make an immediate impact on the squad. They, along with the returness will have the difficult task of filling the void left by the senior class of 2013--which includes
Brynne Buchanan,
Tara Anguiano and the record-setting triumvirate of All-Americans
Jessica Iwata,
Kelly Majam, and
Kaia Parnaby.
The Rainbow Wahine will have 19 days of practice in October and November to prepare for the 2014 softball season. The fall season will culminate with the annual Kama`aina Classic, Nov. 8-9, 2013. This year's tournament will feature UH taking on BYU-Hawai`i and Chaminade.
(See schedule below). There is no Alumnae Game scheduled for the fall, but still may be scheduled for the spring at a later date.
