HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (20-17, 12-6 Big West) completed a series sweep over Cal State Bakersfield (8-33, 6-12 BW) with an 8-0 walk-off win in five innings on Saturday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Starting pitcher
Taryn Irimata earned her second-straight complete game and mercy rule shutout, while the 'Bows offense continued its power surge, recording its fourth-straight game with double-digit hits.
For Hawai'i it marks the second series sweep of the season and the fourth series win with three series to go.
The Rainbow Wahine set the tone in the first inning. After
Carys Murakami singled and
Maycen Gibbs walked,
Jamie McGaughey delivered a two-run opposite-field double down the right-field line to give UH an early 2-0 lead.
The lead doubled in the second inning when
Kolbi Kochi led off with a solo home run to center field. Later, after Kayara Tuiloma doubled, Murakami came through with an RBI-single scoring Tuiloma to extend the lead to 4-0.
After holding the 'Runners scoreless through the top of the fifth, Hawai'i's offense erupted to end the game on a walkoff.
Milan Ah Yat drove in
Larissa Goshi with an RBI single through the left side of the infield.
Briana Maio-Silva then cleared the bases with a two-run double to the right-center gap, scoring both Ah Yat and
Cierra Yamamoto. The game concluded when pinch-hitter
Teiah Keliiholokai drove a solid hit to left-centerfield, bringing home
Keely Kai to trigger the five-inning mercy rule.
Irimata improved to 8-7 overall. She was dominant in the circle, allowing only three hits and one walk while striking out three over 5.0 innings of work.
CSUB's Cedes Saldana suffered her third loss of the series. She allowed three runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout in an inning of work. Amber Estrda threw the final 3.1 innings, allowing five runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
The Rainbow Wahine return to the mainland where they will play a mid-week game at San Diego on Thursday, April 15 at 2:00 p.m. HT. Hawai'i will then begin its three-game conference series on Friday, April 17 at 3:00 p.m. HT. Saturday's doubleheader versus the Tritons will start at 9:00 a.m. HT with the second game to follow at approximately 11:00 a.m. HT.
