Rainbow Baseball Grinds Out Win Over San Francisco

HONOLULU – It wasn't pretty, but the University of Hawai'i baseball team rallied to defeat San Francisco on Thursday night, 2-1, at Les Murakami Stadium. The Rainbows (12-6) were held hitless through six innings, but Joe Goldenberg delivered a two-RBI single in the seventh inning to lead UH to the win.

Matt Sisto earned the win for the 'Bows to improve to 4-1. While USF (9-9) pitcher Alex Balog handling the Rainbow order, Sisto kept his team in the game before leaving after seven innings. He allowed just one unearned run on four hits. Brent Harrison pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his third save.

Balog (0-1) was tagged with the loss in seven innings of work. He allowed one earned run and recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts.

There were 2,697 tickets issued for tonight's contest, and a turnstile count of 1,402.

The Dons capitalized on a Rainbow error in the sixth inning to take a 1-0 lead. Pi'ikea Kitamura (1-3) had an opportunity to start an inning-ending double play, but his errant throw allowed Adam Clear to advance to second and move Nik Balog (1 H, 1 R) over to third. Balog then came home on a sacrifice fly from Brendan Hendricks (1 H, 1 RBI).

After going hitless through six innings, the 'Bows came to life with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. Collin Bennett (1 H, 1 R) posted UH's first hit, and a pair of Kitamura and Zack Swasey ( 1 R) bunts later, the 'Bows had the bases loaded. Goldenburg then stepped to the plate and ripped a Balog pitch through the left side of the infield for what turned out to be the game winner.

The Rainbows and Dons continue their series Friday. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
