Box score

Mesa, Ariz. – The University of Hawai'i baseball team opened the 2011 WAC Tournament with a 2-1 win over San Jose State. With the win, the top-seeded Rainbows advance to the winners bracket to play Fresno State on Friday.

Matt Sisto (5-5) pitched arguably his best of the season, delivering a dominant performance before being spelled for Blair Walters in the eighth inning. He threw seven shutout innings, allowing one run on five hits with three strikeouts and just one walk. Lenny Linsky pitched a scoreless ninth inning, picking up his 13th save of the season.

Spartan pitcher Esteban Guzman (5-4) went the distance in receiving the loss, allowing two runs with five strikeouts. Danny Stienstra led SJSU (34-25) at the plate, batting 3-4 with one RBI.

After a stalemate through seven innings, the Rainbows (33-23) struck first when Kitamura ripped a double to left centerfield, scoring Garrett Champion (1 H, 1 R) from second and Breland Almadova from first.

SJSU grabbed its first and only run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Stienstra's RBI-single cut the lead to one run.

Fresno State advanced to the matchup with UH after defeating Louisiana Tech earlier today. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. PT (4:00 p.m. HT).
