Rainbows Split Twinbill With New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Hawai'i baseball team split a doubleheader with New Mexico State. The first-place Rainbows (31-22, 16-6) fell to the Aggies (33-21, 8-14) 15-4 in game one but took the night cap, 14-4. 

The 'Bows were no match for NMSU in game one. Matt Sisto (4-5) allowed seven runs in 1.2 innings before being relieved by Brent Harrison (4 ER, 2.1 inn.). Ryan Beck (10-4) allowed four runs on seven hits to earn the win for the Aggies. 

Jeff Van Doornum led UH at the plate, hitting 2-3 with one run and two RBI including a solo homerun in the fourth inning. Collin Bennett and Breland Almadova both added two hits and one run. 

Tanner Rust led NMSU batting 3-3 with four RBI and one run, and Tanner Waite (1-3, 2 R, 2 RBI) and Zach Voight (1-2, 2 R, 2 RBI) both homered. 

In the nightcap, it was Hawai'i's turn to do the damage at the plate. The 'Bows scored 12 of their runs in third, fourth, and fifth innings and were led by monster performances by Bennett and Kolten Wong. Wong batted 3-4 with three runs and four RBI, with Bennett hitting 3-4 with one run and three RBI including two doubles. 

Zac Fisher led the Aggies batting 3-4 with one run scored. 

Jarrett Arakawa pitched four innings before leaving with UH comfortably ahead. Blair Walters (7-2) would end up earning the win, tossing five shutout innings with five strikeouts. Dan Reid (7-4) received the loss allowing 12 earned runs in 4.2 innings of work. 

Almadova posted two hits and four runs, and Pi'ikea Kitamura added two hits and two runs. 

With wins in the final two games of the series, the Rainbows will win the WAC regular season outright and claim the No. 1 seed in the WAC Tournament. Game three of the series is set for Friday, May 20, at 6:05 MST (2:05 p.m. HST).
