Track & Field Wins Two More Medals On Final Day Of WAC Championships

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's track and field team completed the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships Friday at the Clarence T.C. Ching Field. The Rainbow Wahine finished eighth and picked up two more medals in the triple jump and 1500-meter run.
 
For the four-day meet, UH earned two golds, one silver, and two bronze medals.
 
In the team standings, Louisiana Tech captured its seventh-straight WAC Championship with a 14 point advantage over Utah State, 152-138. Nevada finished third (125.5) followed by Fresno State (92), Idaho (91), New Mexico State (82), Boise State (69), and Hawai'i (65.5).
 
UH senior Ashley Aitken captured silver in the 1500-meters, and in the process became the first UH athlete to medal in the event since Kelly Young won silver in 2004. Aitken completed the race in 4:29.22. Less than an hour later, she competed in the 800-meters and finished seventh at 2:16.85.
 
In the triple jump, junior Madara Apine won bronze with a mark of 40-2.25 (12.25m). Apine is a two-time silver medalist at WAC Indoor. Teammate Amanda Alvarez took sixth with a season-best mark of 38-7 (11.76m).
 
A pair of Rainbow Wahine scored points in the pole vault as freshman Kaleigh Morrison placed sixth with a clearance of 11-3.75 (3.45m) and junior Mallory Ramsey tied for seventh at 10-10 (3.30m).
 
Freshman Kellsey Trimble placed eighth in the javelin in her first WAC Championships after throwing 134-10 (41.11m). In the shot put, senior Careena Onosai completed her career by finishing ninth with a throw of 42-5-5 (12.94m).
 
On Thursday, UH captured three medals including golds by Sarah Saddleton (high jump) and TeRina Keenan (discus) and a bronze by Emma MacCorquodale (hammer).
