KAHULUI, Maui—The University of Hawai`i at Manoa closed their fall season with a 12-0 win over UH-Hilo in an exhibition game played at Maui High School's Patsy Mink Softball Stadium today in Kahului, Maui.
Stephanie Ricketts and
Kaia Parnaby combined for a no-hit shut-out over the Vulcans, while the offense pounded out 12 runs on 11 hits.
Ricketts fired the first four innings, allowing just two runners to reach on walks with seven strike outs. Parnaby closed the game, firing the last three innings also with two walks and seven strike outs.
The 'Bows—the visiting team in the game—jumped out to a fast start, batting around the line-up in the first inning and scoring six runs.
Kelly Majam was hit by a pitch to start things off. Kayla Wartner followed with an opposite-field, two-run blast over the leftfield fence.
Sarah Robinson then followed with a solid solo shot over the fence in left. Later, with two outs and the bases loaded,
Dara Pagaduan ripped a bases clearing triple down the leftfield line that ricocheted off the third baseman's glove and bounced into the leftfield corner to give UH an early 6-0 lead.
In the third inning, UH increased their lead to 8-0.
Sharla Kliebenstein and
Alexandra Aguirre started the inning with consecutive singles. Later, with two outs, Pagaduan came through again in the clutch, drilling a single to leftfield. Kliebenstein scored from second and Aguirre crossed the plate on a throwing error by the leftfielder.
The 'Bows added four runs in the fifth inning to cap the scoring at 12-0. Kliebenstein led off the inning hitting a grounder deep in the hole at short and beat the throw out for an infield single and scored on Aguirre's double down the leftfield line. Brynne Buchana then reached on a throwing error off a bunt to the pitcher that allowed Aguirre to score. Pagaduan then collected her third hit of the afternoon to put runners at the corners. Majam then launched a sacrifice fly to left field to score Buchanan from third and later, Pagaduna scored on a single to right by Wartner.
For the Vulcans, Ashley Nelson threw the first 3.0 innings, allowing eight runs on five hits with three walks and a strike out and three walks. Jessica Pepin threw the next 2.0 innings, giving up four runs on four hits with three strike outs. Amber Waracker finished the game, firing the final two innings, holding UH off the scoreboard, giving up just one hit with four strike outs.
The Rainbow Wahine were led at the plate by Pagaduan, who went 3-for-4 with a triple, four RBI and a run scored. Aguirre and Kliebenstein both went 2-for-3 with Aguirre scoring three runs and hitting a double. Kliebenstein also scored two runs. Wartner went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI and Robinson went 1-for-4 with a home run.
Today's win marked the end of their fall season. It was the first time the 'Bows faced UH-Hilo since 2004 and it was the first time since 2004 that UH played on the island of Maui. Next up for Hawai`i is the regular season starting in February. First up is the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic featuring DePaul, Missouri-Kansas City, and Seattle from Feb. 9-11.
