Men’s Tennis Falls To Nationally Ranked Duke

HONOLULU – The No. 37 University of Hawai'i men's tennis team played its first dual match of the season, dropping a 7-0 decision to No. 14 Duke Saturday at the UH Tennis Complex.

The Blue Devils who boast three nationally ranked singles players—including two players in the Top 10—showed their worth by winning all six singles matches and sweeping a trio of doubles competitions.

The day started with doubles action as Duke took all three matches for the first point, including an 8-1 win by the No. 12-ranked pair of Henrique Cunha and Reid Carleton over Dennis Lajola and Leo Rosenberg on the No. 1 court.

In singles play, the Blue Devils took all six courts, but two Rainbow Warriors extended their matches to a third set. Lajola gave Cunha, ranked ninth nationally in singles, all he could handle on the feature court, before falling 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. Meanwhile freshman Jared Spiker took Jared Pinsky to a third set before losing 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

After facing No. 13 Louisville and No. 14 Duke on consecutive days, UH will host its final ranked team of the weekend when they play No. 3 Tennessee on the final day of the Rainbow Warrior Challenge on Monday, Jan. 10 at 1:30 p.m.
