LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team rebounded from a five-set loss to UC San Diego a night earlier with a four-set win Saturday night at RIMAC Arena. Set scores for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match were 25-21, 25-20, 20-25, 25-20.
The Warriors (2-5, 2-2 MPSF) were led by
Jonas Umlauft's 24 kills on .395 hitting. It marked his fifth consecutive 20-kill outing and sparked Hawai'i to a team hitting percentage of .424. Outside hitter
Joshua Walker hit .458 with 13 kills and middle blockers
Brennon Dyer and
Jarrod Lofy combined for 11 kills and .475 hitting.
UCSD (4-6, 2-3) featured a balanced attack with four players in double figures led by Carl Eberts' 14 kills.
UH broke open the first set with a four-point run, after back-to-back kills by Umlauft, for a 14-9 lead. The Tritons closed to within 18-16 before the Warriors scored three straight and put the set out of reach.
UCSD jumped out to a 6-2 lead in Set 2 before the Warriors rallied with a 6-0 spurt for an 11-7 lead. With
Nejc Zemljak at the service line, UH scored five straight to built its lead to 19-11.
After the Tritons captured Set 3, the Warriors built an insurmountable lead by scoring four straight, capped by an ace by Umlauft – UH's only one of the night – to take an 18-12 lead.
Freshman
Scott Hartley started his first career match in place of
Steven Hunt and finished with three kills, four digs, and two blocks.
The Warriors return to Honolulu to host a two-match MPSF series with UC Santa Barbara, Thursday, Feb. 3 and Friday, Feb. 4 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
