SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's and women's swimming & diving teams swept both Wyoming and UC San Diego on Friday afternoon at the Canyon Aquatic Center. UH won a total of 10 events on the women's side, while the UH men claimed nine victories on the day.
Both the men's and women's teams kicked off the meet winning the 400 medley relay. The Rainbow Wahine finished with a time of 3:51.03 just in front of host UCSD (3:54.66). The Rainbow Warriors cut it close, finishing with a time of 3:24.14, just about one second before Wyoming (3:25.25).
The UH women took one-two-three finishes in the 1650 free, 200 free, and on the one-meter and three-meter dives. Sophomore
Melissa Myers won the 1650 free (17:24.75) and was followed by
Amanda McTeague (17:32.29) and Christina Boring (18:01.98). Senior
Ricarda Schellenberg won the 200 free with a time of 1:53.03 followed by teammates
Annathea Accornero (1:55.85) and
Haydn Maclean (1:56.12) in second and third.
Senior
Emma Friesen dominated the women's one-meter dive taking first with a score of 308.35 while senior
Stephanie De Lima took the three-meter with a score of 325.80.
Additionally for the Rainbow Wahine, senior
Maura Barrett won the 50 free (24.18), newcomer sophomore
Taylor Ritenberg blew away the competition taking first in the 200 IM four seconds in front of UCSD's Emily Adamczyk (2:10.84). Sophomore
Madeline Takaki won the 200 fly with a time of 2:08.19.
The Rainbow Wahine made two one-two finishes in the 100 free and 500 free, sealing a win for the meet. Junior
Christa Prior won the 100 free (52.63) while Barrett took second (52.88). In the 500 free, Myers took first (5:05.59) and was followed by McTeague in second (5:07.79).
The UH men were led by senior
Ilia Reyes, juniors
James Clarke and #
Lazar Bogdanovski#, and sophomore
Luca Mazzurana. Reyes won both the 50 free (20.64) and the 100 free (46.06) while Clarke won the 200 free (1:41.57) and the 500 free (4:34.16). Bogdanovski took first in the 200 back with a time of 1:50.97 while Mazzurana won the 200 IM (1:53.30).
Freshmen
Ryan Pickett and
Christopher Dominguez along with Mazzurana earned a one-two-three finish in the 200 fly. Pickett took first (1:53.49) while Dominguez (1:53.72) and Mazzurana (1:55.37) followed in second and third, respectively.
Junior
Douglas Cohen led the Rainbow Warrior diving team, taking first on the three-meter (359.50) and second on the one-meter (312.95).
Thomas Rugg finished in third on both the one-meter (282.10) and three-meter (306.40) events.
UH swimming & diving will compete tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 29 once again at the Canyon Aquatic Center in San Diego, Calif. They will face Wyoming, UCSD and San Diego State.
