SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The No. 23 University of Hawai'i Rainbow baseball team (20-10) beat the Santa Clara Broncos (10-17) 8-4 in a mid-week game at Stephen Schott Stadium Tuesday.
Alex Capaul (1-1) got the win, striking out five while allowing three runs in 6.0 innings. Cory Hall (0-4) took the loss for the Broncos.
Kevin Macdonald led the way, going 2-for-5 with three RBI, two runs and a double.
Kolten Wong added a 2-for-3 game with two runs, one RBI, two stolen bases and a double.
Landon Hernandez went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI while
Greg Garcia went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and a run.
The Rainbows jumped out early, putting up four runs in the top of the first. Macdonald got it started with a two-run single, then came around to score on a single by Wong. Jeffrey Van Doornum later drove in Wong, getting the 'Bows out 4-0 to start.
Santa Clara answered with a run in the bottom of the first before Wong scored again in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by
Sean Montplaisir, pushing the scored to 5-1.
The Broncos scored a run in the bottom of the third and another in the fifth, pulling the deficit back to 5-3.
Macdonald struck again in the seventh, driving in an RBI-single to get the Rainbow lead to 6-3. Hernandez then added his second home run in as many games, a two-run shot to left, pushing the UH advantage to 8-3.
SCU added a run in the bottom of the ninth, making the final 8-4.
The Rainbows will now head to Nevada for a four-game WAC series starting Thursday, Apr. 9. The first game starts at 6 p.m. (3 p.m. HST)
