HONOLULU – The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team won their third Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Friday and seventh straight overall, at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex over No. 7 San Diego State, 11-9. With the win the Rainbow Wahine improve to 16-7 overall and 3-4 in MPSF action.
UH got off to a slow start in the first quarter, giving the Aztecs a strong 4-1 lead after eight minutes. The Rainbow Wahine, however, went on to score six unanswered goals in the second quarter leaking into the third and led 7-4 midway through the third quarter.
Freshman
Monika Eggens scored a goal with 35 seconds left until halftime, giving UH their first lead of the match.
The Aztecs answered back in the middle of the third quarter when Ronni Gautschi put in a goal. The Rainbow Wahine continued to rally with the Aztecs but held on to a 10-7 lead to start the final quarter.
SDSU snuck up on UH when Jenna Schuster scored two unanswered goals for the Aztecs, bringing the score to a close 10-9. With 3:11 left in the match, junior
Leonie Van Der Molen secured the home team's lead to 11-9. From then, the Rainbow Wahine were able to hold off the Aztecs for victory.
Leading the way Friday for the Rainbow Wahine was Van Der Molen with five goals and for the Aztecs, Erinn Greenwood scored four of the team's nine goals.
UH will play next in an exhibition match against Canada on Apr. 9 at 6:00 p.m. at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.
