HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i water polo team played solid defense down the stretch and held off San Jose State to win 8-7, on Sunday afternoon in the fifth place game in the MPSF Championship at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.
With the victory, UH finishes the regular season with an 18-8 overall record, and went 2-1 in the MPSF Championship. San Jose State finished 1-2 in the tournament.
The Rainbow Wahine will now wait to find out if they are selected as an at-large team for the NCAA Tournament.
The Rainbow Wahine scored the first goal of the game when
Dagmar Genee scored a minute into the game. Both teams went back-and-forth the rest of the quarter, ending in a 3-3 tie.
In the second quarter, San Jose State's Kathryn Hannum scored to give San Jose State a 4-3 lead early on. UH came back with goals by
Monika Eggens and
Carmen Eggens and eventually took a 7-6 lead at halftime.
UH scored the first goal of the third quarter when
Monika Eggens scored her second of the game 3:40 into the second half. San Jose State answered with a goal by Adriana Vogt with just under two minutes left in the third quarter to cut the UH lead to 8-7.
Both teams played scoreless in the fourth quarter as UH held off San Jose State for the victory.
