HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i softball team (9-13) defeated Oregon State, 3-2 in dramatic fashion this afternoon in the final game of the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament.
Audrey Andrade hit a bases loaded, two out, walk-off, RBI single that drove in
Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu to win the game. Freshman pitcher
Stephanie Ricketts threw 6.2 shut-out innings in relief to earn the win, retiring the last 10 batters in a row.
Ricketts gave up just two hits with a walk and six strike outs to even her record at 4-4 on the season. She faced just 23 batters in the 6.2 innings of work.
The Beavers got off to a fast start, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. McKenna Lowe was hit by a pitch with one out and designated player Audrey Roderfeld drilled a two-run home run to left-centerfield. After a single and a walk, UH starter
Courtney Baughman was relieved by Ricketts, who inherited a two-ball count to DeAnn Young. Young drew a walk to load the bases full of Beavers. But Ricketts was able to get Tarah Black to hit a ground ball to
Julie Franklin at short, who threw home for the force out and the second out of the inning. The next batter, Nikki Chandler then struck out looking to end the inning.
In the bottom of the first, the 'Bows cut their deficit in half with a rally of their own. With one down,
Dara Pagaduan hit a line shot off the OSU pitcher's shin for a single. The next two batters,
Clare Warwick and Amanda Tauali'i were both hit by pitches to load the bases. A wild pitch that ricocheted around the backstop, allowed Pagaduan to score from third.
Tauali`i led the third inning off with a solo home run over the right-centerfield fence to knot the game at 2-2.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the seventh. Tauali`i was beaned the second time in the game to start the inning. Pinch-runner
Traci Yoshikawa then entered the game and moved to second on a hard hit infield single by Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu. Pinch-hitter
Richie-Anne Titcomb battled for a walk to load the bases. Franklin then hit a ground ball to third and on the play, Yoshikawa was thrown out at the plate for the inning's first our. Then Andrade came through with a clutch single to centerfield to score Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu from third to win the game.
The Rainbow Wahine were led by
Tanisha Milca who went 2-for-4; Pagaduan who was 3-for-4 with a run scored; Tauali`i was 1-for-2 with the home run; Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu was 2-for-4 and scored the winning run; and Andrade was 2-for-3 after entering the game in the third inning.
