No. 4 Water Polo Wins On Last Second Shot Against No. 5 California

HONOLULU – The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team defeated No. 5 California, 6-5, in the last seconds of a rollercoaster match Saturday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. The team has now added a second victory to their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation record and are 15-7 overall, and 2-4 in the MPSF.
 
From the beginning of the match, UH and California (27-5, 2-3 MPSF) traded the lead. Within the first minute of the game, the Golden Bears scored a goal, however UH quickly answered back when junior Dagmar Genee put in a goal as soon as the Rainbow Wahine regained possession. Sophomore Carmen Eggens later was able to score again at 2:31 for UH, but California added two goals in the quarter's last two minutes, taking the lead 3-2.
 
Both teams did not score in the second quarter keeping the Golden Bears with a 3-2 lead by halftime.
 
The Rainbow Wahine started off the second half strong, with Eggens tying the score at 3 at the beginning of the second half. California then quickly recovered its lead again, beforre sophomore Saara Majuri scored with one minute to go in the third, tying the game going into the final quarter.
 
In the middle of the fourth quarter, junior Leonie Van Der Molen's goal gave UH the lead for the first time since start of the match. However, California's Paige Lorenz scored again for the Bears with 2:59 on the clock, tying the score for the fifth time in the match. With 14 seconds left in the game, senior Kelly Mason took a long shot and scored for the Rainbow Wahine for the 6-5 victory.
 
Leading the Rainbow Wahine in goals was Eggens with two, while Remy Champion, Lorenz, Meghan Corso, Stephanie Schnugg and Camille Hewko all contributed one goal towards California's five points.
 
UH will take on No. 7 San Diego State on Apr. 3 at 6:00 p.m., at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
