LOS ANGELES – The University of Hawai`i water polo team rallied from a halftime deficit and scored the game-winning goal with two minutes left to beat No. 10 Loyola Marymount, 8-7, on Monday afternoon at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center in Los Angeles.
Playing in their fifth game in three days, the fourth-ranked Rainbow Wahine trailed 5-3 at halftime, but scored two goals in the third quarter to tie the game and scored three in the final quarter.
With the score tied 7-7, UH's
Saara Majuri found the far corner with 2:02 left in the game, for what turned out to be the game-winning goal. The Rainbow Wahine are now 14-7 overall, while LMU dropped to 13-5.
The Lions took a 5-3 lead at the half thanks to goals from four different players. Sophomore Mary Ann Campos scored two in the half. The game was tied at 3-3 but the Lions scored on goals from Campos and junior Anne Scott in the closing minutes of the half to take the two-goal lead.
However, Hawai`i responded by scoring the games next four goals over a span eclipsing 10 minutes to take a 7-5 lead.
Lisa van Raalte made it 5-4 two minutes into the third quarter and
Leonie Van Der Molen tied it at the 4:45 mark of the quarter.
A goal from
Kelly Mason with 7:35 to play in regulation gave the Rainbow Wahine their first lead and then a five-meter penalty goal from
Dagmar Genee gave UH the 7-5 lead with 5:48 to play.
Overall, Mason, van Raalte and Van Der Molen each scored two goals and Genee and Majuri each had one goal.
The Rainbow Wahine return home to face Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponent California on Saturday, March 28 at 12 p.m. at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.
