Box Score

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i softball team (2-9) mounted a late rally, but Maryland (2-5) held off the 'Bows, 3-2 on the first day of the Cathedral City Classic.

In the loss, Hawai'i's Courtney Baughman (2-5) threw a complete game, giving up three runs on eight hits with a walk and four strike outs.

The Terrapins' Sarah Dooley (1-2) also threw all seven innings, giving up two runs on three hits with two walks and two strike outs.

Maryland struck first, getting a home run in the top of the second by Breanna Shaw to take an early 1-0 lead.

In the third, the Terps added another run. Lydia Fowler led the inning off with a single through the left side of the infield. Nadine Blackie followed with another single putting runners at first and second with no outs. Vangie Galindo then executed a sacrifice bunt to third, pushing both runners into scoring position. The next batter, Niki Lau, got an RBI off a ground out to third. The only play was to first and Maryland pinch runner, Kathy McLaughlin, scored the second run of the game.

In the top of the fifth, Blackie got her second hit of the game, on a single up the middle. Blackie then stole second and after a strike out, Lau got a bunt base hit back to the pitcher to put runners at the corners. Alex Shultz then came through with a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Blackie, putting the Terrapins up 3-0.

Terps' pitcher Dooley retired the first seven batters of the game, and proceeded to hold the 'Bows hitless until Katie Grimes lined a base hit up the middle with two outs in the fifth.

In the bottom of the seventh, Hawai'i mounted their rally. Richie-Anne Titcomb led the inning off by getting hit by a pitch. After a pop-up, Kanani Pu'u-Warren reached on a fielding error on the second baseman. A walk to Grimes then loaded the bases for Tanisha Milca, who grounded out to short. Milca was out at first, but got the RBI as Titcomb crossed the plate. Clare Warwick then got a single back to the pitcher to drive in Pu'u-Warren from third to cut the lead to 3-2. But Dooley got the final out on a fly to right to end the rally and the game.

The Rainbow Wahine continue their play in the Cathedral City Classic tomorrow at the Big League Dreams Sports Park's Wrigley Field, where they 'Bows will face No. 9/10 Tennessee at 3:00 pm.
