HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i Rainbow Warrior basketball team overcame a 13-point halftime deficit and defeated Chaminade, 70-61, Wednesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. UH improved to 4-4 overall with its second straight win.
Roderick Flemings scored all 18 of his points in the second half to lead the Rainbow Warriors to the comeback win, while
Hiram Thompson also came up huge, setting new career highs with 17 points and eight rebounds.
The Rainbow Warriors, who didn't take their first lead until less than four minutes remaining, ended the game on a decisive 21-4 run. The UH defense came alive in the second half, holding Chaminade (1-4) to just 27 percent shooting after the break.
In just the fourth all-time regular-season meeting between the teams, the Division II Silverswords gave UH all it could handle. From the moment Steven Bennett banked in a 3-pointer on the game's first possession, to Shane Hanson's buzzer beater at the end of the first half, UH had early difficulty keeping up with the Silverswords. Chaminade took a 38-25 lead into the locker room on the strength of nine 3-pointers. All but three of their field goals in the first half came from behind the arc, led by Hanson's four treys. The Rainbow Warriors, however, clamped down on the Silverswords in the second half when the Swords made just 1-of-14 on 3-pointers.
UH trailed by as many as eight with seven minutes remaining, but took it first lead of game, 60-59, at the 3:55 mark on a pair of
Adhar Mayen free throws. It was a lead the Rainbow Warriors would not relinquish as the Silverswords scored just two points the remainder of the game. Mayen finished with 12 points and added six rebounds.
Hanson led Chaminade with 18 points, with just four coming after the break. Bennett, meanwhile finished with 15 points and eight assists to help keep the 'Bows at bay for much of the second half.
