HILO, Hawai`i -
Matthew Daly pitched a one-hit, complete-game shutout, as the University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (30-19) defeated the UH-Hilo Vulcans (12-34-1) 8-0 at Francis Wong Stadium Friday. Daly (5-1) took a no-hitter into the ninth inning, ending up with nine strikeouts and just one walk to get the win. Clayton Uyechi (2-3) took the loss for UH-Hilo.
After walking the first batter of the game, Daly retired the next 24 batters heading into the ninth inning. The sophomore struck out Colins Obed to start the inning, but then gave up a single up the middle to Ronel Trias, stopping Daly's bid for the no-hitter. He would recover to strike out David Chu and get Michael Higa to fly out to left, giving him the one-hit shutout. The last nine-inning, one-hitter by a UH player came on Feb. 17, 2006, at Loyola Marymount, by Steven Wright.
To go along with the dominant pitching, the 'Bows again hit well, pounding out 12 hits and eight runs. Elijah Christensen led the way, going 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs and two RBI. Brandon Haislet added a 2-for-4 game with two doubles, one run and one RBI while Vinnie Catricala was also 2-for-4 with a double, a run and one RBI. Landon Hernandez also went 2-for-3 with one RBI while Evan Zimny was 1-for-3 with two runs.
The Rainbows got on the scoreboard first in the third inning, scoring on a RBI-double by Derek DuPree. The 'Bows then added a four-run inning in the fifth, highlighted by Christensen's two-run home run, his first of the season, making it 5-0.
Hawai`i later added single runs in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings, making the final score 8-0.
The Rainbows will close out their series with the in-state rival Vulcans tomorrow at noon at Wong Stadium.
