CORVALLIS, Ore. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (45-17) fell the No. 5 Oregon State Beavers (42-14) 12-3 in front of a crowd of 2,783 at Goss Stadium Sunday, ending the Rainbows' season.
Matthew Daly (6-2) took the loss for UH while Mike Stutes (7-2) got the win.
Esteban Lopez went 2-for-3 a double and two RBI in his final game with the 'Bows. Matthew Inouye also left his mark in his finale, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run. Kristoffer Sanchez added a 2-for-3 game with a double and a run while Derek DuPree also went 2-for-3.
UH again allowed their opposition to get on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning as OSU put up a run on a sacrifice fly to go up 1-0. The Beavers again got to Daly in the top of the third, scoring three runs to boost their lead to 4-0.
Inouye jump-started the Rainbow offense for the second-straight game, hitting a double with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Jonathan Hee then drove in Inouye with a RBI-single before scoring on a single by Lopez, cutting the Rainbows' deficit back to 4-2.
Oregon State responded with another run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth, pushing their edge to 5-2. But Hawai`i kept fighting as Sanchez and Lopez hit back-to-back doubles with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to score a run. UH had an opportunity to do more damage in the inning, but left the bases loaded to keep their deficit at 5-3.
The Beavers took advantage, coming back with three runs in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to 8-3. They then blew it open in the eighth, scoring four more runs to get it to 12-3. That turned out to be the final score, ending the Rainbows' season.
It also ends the careers of seven seniors, Luis Avila, Justin Costi, Inouye, Lopez, Adam Roberts, Dean Turner and Robbie Wilder.
