HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (1-1) fell to the UCLA Bruins (3-3) 5-4 in front of a crowd of 3,016 at the Les Murakami Stadium Saturday. Freshman
Rich Olsen (0-1) got the loss for the Rainbows despite giving up just one hit, one walk and no earned runs in three innings of relief. David Johnson got the win for UCLA.
Joshua Green led the way for UH at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double. Brent Cook went 1-for-2 with a triple and three walks while Brian Finegan went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a double. Justin Cayetano pitched well for the Rainbows, giving up just three earned runs in six innings of work, striking out six while walking none.
The Bruins started the scoring as Chris Denove hit a two-run double in the top of the first for the 2-0 lead. UH came back to score two runs in the second inning as Rocky Russo scored on an error before Finegan drove in a run.
UCLA came back with another two-run inning in the third inning, before Green would drive in a run in the bottom of the inning to cut the Bruin lead to 4-3. Green would then drive in another run on a double in the fifth inning to tie the game at four.
In the top of the ninth, UCLA's Sean Carpenter would single to center field, before advancing all the way home on a passed ball and a wild pitch, giving the Bruins the 5-4 victory.
The two teams will close out their three-game series tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium. Ricky Bauer is scheduled to pitch for the Rainbows, while Casey Janssen is slated to start for the Bruins.
