Box Score

FRESNO, Calif. – The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (16-39, 5-24) fell to the Fresno State Bulldogs (31-27, 18-11) 6-2 in front of 2,759 fans at Pete Beiden Field Saturday night. Bob Runyan (10-8) pitched a complete game win for the Bulldogs, while Ricky Bauer (1-9) got the loss for Hawai`i.

The Bulldogs got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning as Joey Myers hit a solo home run to give them the 1-0 lead. Fresno State gave the 'Bows another scare in the inning with runners at the corners, but Derek Honma made a great catch at the left field fence to hold FSU to a one-run inning.

Scooter Martines then hit a single up the middle in the top of the fourth, scoring Brent Cook from second base to tie the game at one.

But Fresno State retook the lead 5-1, getting four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Myers then hit his second home run of the game in the bottom of the sixth to extend the Bulldog lead to 6-1.

The Rainbows were able to score one run on an error by Fresno State in the seventh to cut the lead down to four runs. But that was all that UH could muster, falling by the final count of 6-2.

Leading the way for the 'Bows was Honma, who went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Tim Montgomery added a 2-for-3 night for Hawai`i while Cook went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

The 'Bows and Bulldogs will close out their seasons tomorrow with the series finale. The game will be the last collegiate game for eight Rainbow seniors as well as legendary Fresno State coach Bob Bennett.
