HONOLULU -- The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (6-9) fell to the UC Irvine Anteaters (11-9) 12-5 at the Les Murakami Stadium Saturday night.
Aaron Pribble (2-1) picked up his first loss of the year while Brett Smith (2-0) got the win for the Anteaters. The ticketed attendance for the game was 2,623.
UC Irvine started out the game in a flurry, scoring five unearned runs in the first inning. Chris Miller then hit a two-run home run for the only earned runs given up by the Rainbow staff. The Anteaters got two more unearned runs in the second to put them up 9-0 in just one and a half innings of play.
Hawai`i started to chip away slightly, scoring a run in the third, fourth and fifth innings. But three more unearned runs came for UCI in the top of the sixth to put their run total up to 12. The 'Bows then added two runs in the eighth and ninth innings but fell short 12-5.
Despite the loss, the Rainbows did get good performances out of many players. Ricky Bauer came in relief and pitched 5.1 innings with no earned runs, four strikeouts and no walks. Lane Nogawa continued to swing the bat well, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two doubles. Schafer Magana came in off the bench to add a 2-for-4 performance with an RBI and a run scored.
Miller led the way for the Anteaters going 2-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored. Brett Smith, who homered in Friday's contest, pitched seven strong innings giving up just four runs with six strikeouts.
The teams will conclude their series Sunday at 1:05 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium.
