George Leads 'Bows to 5-1 Victory Over San Jose State

HONOLULU -- The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (8-16, 1-3 WAC) defeated the San Jose State Spartans (17-9, 3-4 WAC) 5-1 at the Les Murakami Stadium Friday. Chris George (1-2) picked up the win while Jeremy Rogelstad (5-3) got the loss. Bryan Lee came out of the bullpen to get his first save of the season. There were 2,556 tickets issued for the game.

George was the key to the Rainbow victory as he went 7.2 innings with no earned runs while striking out five. Bryan Lee then relieved George in the eighth inning and retired all four batters he faced. Overall, the pitching staff gave up just six hits with no earned runs and combined for six strikeouts.

The 'Bows got it on the board first in the third inning as Lane Nogawa, Scooter Martines and Derek Honma got two-out singles to load the bases. Cortland Wilson then came up with the big hit as he brought home two runners to put Hawai`i up 2-0.

Martines and Honma then drove in a run each in the fifth to push the lead to 4-0. Martines then scored another run in the seventh before the Spartans finally got their only run in the top of the eighth on an error.

Coming up with the bats for Hawai`i were Martines, Honma and Wilson. Martines hit 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Honma added a 3-for-4 performance with one RBI while Wilson went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

The two teams will play again tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium. William Quaglieri is scheduled to pitch for the 'Bows while Jahseam George will go for San Jose State.
