HILO -- The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (7-13) fell to the UH-Hilo Vulcans (5-25-1) 10-9 in a twelve-inning game that spanned two days. Daniel Lockett (2-1) of UH-Hilo picked up the win while
Matt Le Ducq (1-1) got the loss at Francis Wong Stadium.
Hawai`i scored in each of the first three innings and the fifth before giving up the lead for the first time when UH-Hilo scored three in the bottom of the fifth. The Rainbows regained a three-run lead with a five-run sixth inning. But the Vulcans got a three-run shot from Johnny Dudoit in the eighth inning tied the game and sent it into extra innings.
This is where the game got interesting. Both teams' pitchers dominated the ninth, 10th and 11th innings and continued to look dominant in the 12th. After the duo of Joel Zimmerman and Daniel Lockett shut down the Rainbows, UH's Matt Le Ducq looked to have a one-two-three inning. But with a 3-2 count and two outs, the game was called due to rain and was to be resumed on March 16 at 5 p.m.
On Saturday Hawai`i sent out Sean Yamashita, who gave up a walk to Le Ducq's batter and a double to Dudoit that ended up scoring the winning run in the bottom of the 12th, more than 23 hours after the game had started.
Matt Le Ducq had an awesome game in the loss. He gave up just one hit and one walk, while striking out three in 4.1 innings of work. Leading the 'Bows' bats were their two captains, Scooter Martines and Brent Cook. Martines went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored while Cook went 3-for-7 with two runs scored and an RBI.
