Men's Volleyball Opens Big West Championship As Top Seed In Title Defense

The No. 2-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team is the top seed in this week's OUTRIGGER Big West Championship, which runs April 23-25 at the Bren Events Center in Irvine, Calif. The Rainbow Warriors (26-4) will meet with winner of No. 4 seed UC Santa Barbara and No. 5 seed UC San Diego in Friday's semifinal round at 5:00 p.m. PT. UH is the defending tournament champions after captured its fourth championship last season.

FIRST SERVE
  • UH has the most Big West Championship titles among the league (2019, '22, '23, and '25).
  • UH is the tournament's No. 1 seed for the third time after previously earning the nod in 2021 (lost in semis) and 2023 (won championship).
  • The only other time the tournament was held in Irvine, Calif., was 2023 when UH defeated UC Santa Barbara (semis) and host UC Irvine (finals) en route to the championship.
  • UH has an 10-3 all-time record in the Big West Championship tournament.
  • Hawai'i is 5-2 all-time in the semifinal round having reached the finals in 2018, '19, '22, '23, and '25. UH's two losses in the semifinals were to UC San Diego in 2021 and UC Irvine in 2024.
  • UH head coach Charlie Wade has an all-time record of 14-9 in 13 conference tournament appearances (MPSF and Big West) having advanced to the championship match six times with four titles.
  • UH is 3-0 against UCSB in the tournament. The teams met twice in the semifinals (2022 & '23) and once in the quarters (2024).
  • UH and CSUN have never met in the tournament. The Matadors are the only team UH has not faced.
  • UH swept the season series with the Gauchos in Honolulu last month while Hawai'i and CSUN concluded the regular season last week in Honolulu, the Warriors sweeping the two-match series.
  • UH's 26 wins this season is seventh-most in program history and tied for the most wins in a regular season. The six previous UH teams with 26+ wins all reached the NCAA semifinal round or greater.
