Head Coach: Panita Thanatharn (First Season)
Record at UH:/Overall 20-17
Big West Record: 12-6
LAST WEEK – Hawai'i recorded a three-game series sweep over Cal State Bakersfield that saw the Rainbow Wahine outscore the Roadrunners, 32-8. The Rainbow Wahine have been a force at home with a 14-4 record this year. UH won their last two home games vs. CSUB by mercy rule, 14-0 and 8-0.
For their efforts, junior third baseman Jamie McGaughey earned her first Big West Field Player of the Week award, while sophomore pitcher Taryn Irimata earned her third Big West Pitcher of the Week honor. McGaughey hit .667 (6-for-9) with two doubles, two home runs, and nine RBI. Irimata fired a pair of complete-game shutouts via the mercy rule. She had a 0.00 ERA in 10.0 innings pitched, allowing just four hits with 10 strikeouts over the two appearances.
BIG WEST STANDINGS - With three weeks left in the Big West season, Hawai'i enters this week tied for third with Long Beach State with a 12-6 record. Cal State Fullerton leads the league with a 16-2 mark, while UC Santa Barbara is a game ahead of UH and LBSU at 13-5. The 'Bows have the tiebreaker over the Beach, but UH lost their series to CSF and UCSB earlier this season.
KEYS FOR UH - When Hawai'i scores first, they are 13-3. The 'Bows are 18-1 when leading after four innings; conversely, UH is 1-16 when trailing after four. Hawai'i is also 18-1 when they out-hit their opponents. Since UH's doubleheader win at Long Beach State, UH has outscored their opponents 77-26 in conference games.
PITCHING & DEFENSE – Overall as a team, Hawai'i ranks fifth in the Big West in hitting at .284. But it's the team's pitching and defense that has held its own. The pitching staff is ranked second in the league with a 3.65 ERA and UH is second in the BW with a .971 fielding percentage
DEFENSIVE LINEUP – Except for the catching position, Hawai'i has found a consistent defensive alignment over the past 10 conference games. Millie Fidge, who had primarily been used as a pitcher and designated player over her first three years at UH, has found a starting role at first base over the last 10 games, except for a start at pitcher vs. #10 UCLA. Jamie McGaughey had started the first 26 games at first before she shifted across the diamond to start the last 10 at the hot corner. Carys Murakami, who was splitting time between second and third base, has started the last 10 games at second base. Milan Ah Yat and Maycen Gibbs have started all 37 games at shortstop and center field, respectively. Kayara Tuiloma has started 13 of the last 14 games in left field, while Rhea Furtado has started six of UH's last nine games in right.
CATCHING CAROUSEL – The departure of last year's Big West Defensive Player of the Year, Izabella Martinez, has left a void for the 'Bows to fill. Martinez, who graduated last year, was a four-year starter behind the plate. This year, four different Rainbow Wahine have started at catcher. Junior Keely Kai has 12 starts to lead the cavalcade of catchers. Sophomore Kolbi Kochi has started 11 games behind the plate and nine games as the designated player. Freshman Bailey Nagasako has eight starts at catcher and 11 as the DP, while senior Cierra Yamamoto has started six games at catcher and three in left field.
SPEED ON THE BASES - Hawai'i has utilized an aggressive baserunning attack--stealing bases and advancing on any opportunity the defense gives them. UH has successfully stolen 42-of-51 bases—compared to the 21 total bases stolen last year. Furtado leads UH with 13 stolen bases. Murakami is second on the team with six, while Gibbs has swiped five. In all, 12 different Rainbow Wahine have stolen at least one base this year.
HAWAI'I STRONG - Just over half of Hawai'i's roster hails from the Aloha State. A total of 13 of UH's 24 players stayed or have returned home to don the Green & White. With Irimata starting in the circle, the Rainbow Wahine have had as many as eight local players in the starting lineup. Ten players come to UH from the island of O'ahu, with two from Maui and one from Kaua'i.
McGAUGHEY POWERING OFFENSE - The undisputed anchor of the lineup, junior
Jamie McGaughey leads the team in nearly every major offensive category. She currently leads UH batting .382 overall with a team-highs in hits (39), doubles (10), home runs (6), RBI (32), walks (17-tied with Murakami), and on-base percentage (.472). Her dominance has been raised in Big West play, where she is hitting .444 with a .778 slugging percentage. She is a consistent threat, recording team-highs with 12 multi-hit games and 10 multi-RBI games this season. McGaughey is currently on a six-game hitting streak.
FIDGE FIRED UP – Senior Millie Fidge is a versatile "two-way" weapon, splitting time between first base, the pitching circle, and the designated player spot. She is batting .368 overall and has shown her power with nine of her 21 hits going for extra bases (3 doubles, 1 triple and 5 home runs). In conference games, her average remains a steady .362. She also leads the team with a 15-game reached-base streak earlier this season. In the circle, she most recently started UH's game at No. 10 UCLA. She held the Bruins at bay through the first few innings as UH held a 3-1 lead early before UCLA pulled away for a 9-5 win.
TUILOMA ON PATROL - A reliable starter in left field, Tuiloma has posted a .333 overall batting average. She excels in conference matchups, where her average jumps to .421. She is efficient on the base paths, going 1-for-1 in stolen base attempts, and maintains a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage through 41 total chances. She has scored a total of 15 runs and has six extra-base hits (two doubles, two triples and two home runs).
KOCHI COMING THROUGH - Sophomore
Kolbi Kochi has been solid on offense in Big West play, batting .440 in 15 conference appearances. Last week, against CSUB, she hit a perfect 1.000 batting average (5-for-5) with a home run. While she has primarily serves as the designated player, she has seen starts and appearance behind the dish, recording 47 putouts with zero errors this season.
GIBBS ANCHORS THE OUTFIELD - Senior
Maycen Gibbs has started all 37 games in centerfielder. She provides speed and gap power, leading the team with 23 runs scored and has five stolen bases. She is batting .280 overall and has proven to be a clutch run producer with six multi-RBI games. Defensively, she is flawless with a 1.000 fielding percentage on 75 chances.
MURAKAMI SETTING THE TABLE - A staple in the infield and at the top of the batting order, senior
Carys Murakami has started every game this season. Early on she split time between second and third base, but since
Maya Ichimura's injury and McGaughey taking over at third, that has allowed Murakami to focus on playing second base. She is batting .270 and is a key table-setter, usually leading off the batting order. Murakami is tied for the team-lead with 17 walks with McGaughey. She ranks second on the team with 25 runs scored, six stolen bases, and nine multiple-hit games.
IRIMATA STRONG IN THE CIRCLE - Sophomore transfer pitcher
Taryn Irimata is the team's workhorse, leading the staff with 90.0 innings pitched and 59 strikeouts. She has an 8-7 record with a 2.64 ERA. She was nearly untouchable against Cal State Bakersfield, pitching 10.0 scoreless innings in a pair of mercy-rule victories while allowing only four total hits. She has also earned Big West Pitcher of the Week honors three times this season.
PITTS' PITCHING PROWESS – Senior transfer pitcher
Hannah Pitts has been the most effective pitcher in conference play, posting a 1.81 ERA and a 6-1 record in Big West games. Overall, she is 9-4 with a 2.52 ERA and has recorded four shutouts, which ranks her among the national leaders. She is known for her elite control, averaging only 1.07 walks per seven innings.
