IRVINE, Calif.—University of Hawai'i softball players
Jamie McGaughey and
Taryn Irimata earned Big West Field Player and Pitcher of the Week honors respectively after sweeping Cal State Bakersfield this past weekend. For McGaughey, it is her first career conference weekly honor. It is Irimata's third conference weekly honor this season (Feb. 9, March 23, April 13). Hawai'i pitchers Irimata and
Hannah Pitts have combined to earn five of the Big West's 10 weekly award winners thus far this season—including three of the last four honors.
McGaughey, UH's current starting third baseman, helped powered Hawai'i's offensive attack, hitting .667 (6-for-9) with two doubles, two home runs, and she drove in nine of UH's 27 runs scored in the series. She recorded a 1.556 slugging percentage and a .700 on-base percentage.
UH won the first game in a rain soaked slugfest, 10-8. The game started with McGaughey's two-run home run in the first and ended in the sixth as she delivered what proved to be the winning runs on a three-run double to the left-center gap. She tied her career-high in the game, driving in five runs.
During Hawai'i's 14-0 shutout in Game 2, McGaughey continued her tear, going 2-for-2 with another home run and a walk. Her two-run blast in the second inning was part of a 7-run surge.
McGaughey closed the series by going 2-for-3 in an 8-0 win. She added another double and two RBI.
On defense, McGaughey was perfect at the "hot corner" recording 11 total chances (three putouts, eight assists) with zero errors, contributing to two double plays over the weekend.
Irimata led Hawai'i in the circle with back-to-back complete-game shutouts, compiling a 0.00 ERA across 10.0 innings, allowing just four hits overall while holding the Roadrunners to a .118 batting average in the series.
The pitcher from 'Ewa Beach, O'ahu, opened with a one-hit shutout on Friday night, matching her career-high with seven strikeouts while facing just 17 batters.
Irimata followed with another 5.0-inning shutout in the series finale, earning her eighth win of the season while allowing just three hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
