Men's Golf Heads to Historic Pasatiempo for Nationally Televised Western Intercollegiate

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team will make its 16th consecutive appearance in the 79th Western Intercollegiate, presented by Titleist. The three-day tournament runs Monday, April 13 through Wednesday, April 15 at the Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif.

The Golf Channel will once again provide three hours of live coverage per day of the tournament, airing 4:00-7:00 p.m. PT (1:00-4:00 p.m. HT) each day.

Each year, the Western is considered one of the nation's top collegiate golf tournaments. This year's field features eight teams ranked in the Top 50: No. 13 Pepperdine, No. 18 Stanford, No. 22 Arizona, No. 24 BYU, No. 30 UNLV, No. 35 San Diego State, No. 40 USC, and No. 50 UC Irvine. The 15-team field also includes host San José State, California, Chattanooga, Nihon (Japan), Oregon, and Washington.

Participants will play a total of 54 holes, 18 on each day, at the par-70 course with scheduled tee times beginning at 8:00 a.m. PT all three days. Following a 2025 restoration, the course now plays at 6,511 yards and has been fully restored to Dr. Alister MacKenzie's original design specifications. The format is play-six, score-five. Now in its 79th year, the Western is the longest-running college golf tournament west of the Mississippi.

The tournament features a rich history with a former champion list that includes Johnny Miller, Peter Jacobsen, Mark O'Meara, Duffy Waldorf, Bobby Clampett, Patrick Rodgers, Mark Lye, Ken Venturi, and Scottie Scheffler. This year's Masters field includes 19 Western Intercollegiate alumni, featuring past Masters champions Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, and Patrick Reed.

UH's contingent includes Nathan Szpakowicz, Dane Watanabe, James Whitworth, Alec Hilgers, Chris Salem, and Quinn Murray. Szpakowicz and Whitworth both return to Pasatiempo after tying for 70th place in their tournament debuts last year. Watanabe will be making his third appearance at the event after tying for 79th last year and placing 89th as a freshman. Under head coach Scott Simpson, UH's best finish at the Western was 13th in 2023.

Freshmen Hilgers and Salem, and sophomore Murray will be making their Western Intercollegiate debuts at the historic MacKenzie design.

Following the Western Intercollegiate, the Rainbow Warriors will compete in the Big West Conference Championship, April 27-29 in La Quinta, Calif.
