QUICK HITSUH LAST WEEK...
Hawai'i went 3-1 in its final non-conference tournament, defeating Mercyhurst twice and splitting its two games vs. Portland State. Sophomore utility player
Rhea Furtado led Hawai'i with a .583 batting average with team-highs of seven hits, six runs scored, four stolen bases and a .615 on-base percentage. Both
Jamie McGaughey and
Carys Murakami hit identical .417 batting averages with each going 5-for-12 at the plate. Four of McGaughey's hits went for extra bases with two doubles and two home runs. She also tallied five RBI, scored two runs and posted a team-best slugging percentage of 1.003. Murakami scored four runs and drove in two and was 3-for-3 in stolen bases.
Furtado Hitting Her Stride
Furtado, a sophomore utility player who transferred to UH from CSUN this year has started 14 of UH's 18 games thus far at three different positions--rightfield (10), second base (3), and leftfield (2) while also seeing time as the designated player during.a couple of games. The Kapa'a, Kaua'i-native currently lead Hawai'i with a .333 batting average and 11 runs scored. She also is 11-for-11 in stolen bases==which is the most for the Rainbow Wahine since Nawai Kaupe swiped 14 bases in 2022.
McGaughey Fired Up
After a slow start to the season, junior first baseman
Jamie McGaughey is back to firing on all cylinders. Currently, she is second on the squad with a .319 batting average. She leads Hawai'i with four doubles, four home runs, 11 RBI and nine walks and is tied for the team lead with 15 hits. McGaughey also has a team-best .660 slugging percentage and tops the team wth five multiple-hit games and four multiple-RBI games.
Speed on the Basepahts
A new attitude on offense came to UH with first year head coach Panita Thanatharn. UH has been more aggressive on the basebaths taking off for stolen bases and taking advantage of passed balls and wild pitches that in turn puts added pressure on opposing defenses. Through four weeks of the season, Hawai'i already has 30 stolen bases in 33 attempts. Last year, UH stole a total of 21 bases for the season. Last week alone, the 'Bows swiped 12-of-14 bases n the OUTRIGGER Classic.
The Lineup Shuffle
Hawai'i has had 18 different batting lineups in their 18 games this year as they try to find a combination that clicks. Defensively, with rotating catches, second basemen and left/rightfielders there have been three combinations of defensive alignments that have repeated. However, throughout the different lineups, the mainstays have been McGaughey at first base,
Milan Ah Yat at shortstop and
Maycen Gibbs in centerfield--those three have started all 18 games in the same positions.
Carys Murakami has also started all 18 games, but has gotten the start at second base in seven games and 11 starts at third base.
The Pitching Staff
Hawai'i is led by senior transfer
Hannah Pitts who has made a team-high 10 appearances with five starts. Pitts, who transferred this season from Mercer, has a team-best 3.35 ERA in 39.2 innings pitched. She has a team-low four walks to go with 20 strikeouts and enters this week with a 3-3 record.. Sophomore transfer pitcher
Taryn Irimata begins the conference season with a 2-5 record. She has made nine appearances with seven starts in the circle and carries a 3.47 ERA into the Big West. Irimata, who hails from 'Ewa Beach, O'ahu, has thrown 38.1 innings and has a team-high 26 strikeouts with 14 walks. She's had some hard luck with defensive support as she's allowed 28 runs, but only 19 of them have been earned.
Hawai'i Strong
Just over half of the UH team hails from the 50th State of Hawai'i. There are 13 total players from Hawai'i. At times, UH this season has started as many as eight local players when Irimata pitches and one of the Hawai'i players is at designated player. A total of ten come from the island of O'ahu, with two from Maui and one from Kaua'i.
