QUICK HITS
LAST WEEK
Hawai'i started last week with a 9-0 loss at Cal Baptist on Tuesday to closeout the CBU Classic. UH then went 0-5 at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic--in Cathedral City, Calif., falling to BYU, #20 Duke, #10 Nebraska, Oregon State and Saint Mary's (CA). UH ended their two-week roadtrip with an exhibition loss to World #1, Team Japan.

McGaughey Back on Track
First baseman Jamie McGaughey started her junior campaign slowly, but she broke through this past week, leading UH with A .457 batting average (7-for-15). She hit her first collegiate grand slam in UH's loss to Duke. At the MNCC she hit safely in four of five games, scored one run with two doubles, a home run, four RBI and a team-best .800 slugging percentage. Overall, McGaughey raised her average to .285 from .150 a week ago.

Kochi Rising
The only Rainbow Wahine overall to be hitting over the .300-mark entering Week 4 is sophomore catcher/DP Kolbi Kochi. At the MNCC, Kochi hit .455 (5-for-11) with one RBI. Overall, she now leads UH with a .318 average (7-for-22) and she is tied for second with five RBI along with four other Rainbow Wahine. Thus far, she has started seven games--four at catcher and three as the designated player.

Pitching Struggles
After starting the first three weeks with a Team -ERA of 2.95, the UH pitching staff's ERA enters Week 4 at a 4.55 ERA after being outscored 36-to-9 at the MNCC. Overall, sophomore transfer Taryn Irimata leads UH with a 3.57 ERA in 31.1 innings pitched. She has 24 strikeouts to 12 walks while holding opponents to a .250 batting average. Senior transfer Hannah Pitts enters the week with a 3.95 ERA in 26.1 innings, with 15 strikeouts and just four walks while holding opponents to a .331 average.

Hawai'i Strong
Just over half of the UH team hails from the 50th State of Hawai'i. At times, UH this season has started as many as eight local players when Irimata pitches and one of the Hawai'i players is at designated player. Ten come from the island of O'ahu, with two from Maui and one from Kaua'i.

Making an Impact
Last week, true freshman Bailey Nagasako batted her way into the lineup. She got a pinch hit single in the opener vs. BYU, then in her first collegiate start, she went 3-for-4 against #20 Duke  with a run scored. For the tournament, Nagasako hit .333 and scored a run. She is one of four Rainbow Wahine to have started at catcher this season.
