HONOLULU — Following a run to the final four of the NCAA Championship, four members of the Big West champion University of Hawai'i women's water polo team received All-America honors from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches on Friday.
Rainbow Wahine seniors
Bernadette Doyle and
Jordan Wedderburn were named to the Division I All-America second team. Sophomore goalie
Daisy Logtens made the third team and freshman attacker
Ema Vernoux earned a place on the honorable mention list.
Doyle was earlier named the Big West Player of the Year and earned second-team All-America honors for the second consecutive season. The left-hander from New Zealand led the Rainbow Wahine with 39 assists and scored 56 goals to rank second on the team with 95 points. She also sparked the 'Bows on the defensive end with a conference-high 55 steals and became only the second player in program history to reach triple digits in career goals, assists and steals. Doyle closed the season by being named to the NCAA Championship All-Tournament first team.
Wedderburn made the NCAA Championship All-Tournament second team and emerged as a force in the middle in her senior season to pick up her first All-America award. She ranked second on the team with 68 goals and 14 hat tricks and drew a team-high 69 exclusions. Wedderburn scored a career-high seven goals in a win over UC Irvine and tied a program record with three Big West Player of the Week awards.
Logtens made the All-America third team for the second straight season following a standout sophomore season in goal. She was an All-Big West first-team selection and led the conference with a 9.10 goals-against average. She was named the Most Valuable Player of the Big West Championship and finished the season with 209 saves and a .482 save percentage.
Vernoux closed her freshman season as UH's leading scorer and her total of 78 goals was the fourth highest single-season total in program history. She posted a .549 shooting percentage on a team-high 142 attempts on her way to being named the Big West Freshman of the Year. She also led the 'Bows with 16 hat tricks and 98 points.
The Rainbow Wahine went 22-5 in
James Robinson's first season as head coach and swept the Big West regular-season and tournament titles for the second straight year. The 'Bows closed the season in the semifinals of the National Collegiate Women's Water Polo Championship for a second consecutive season.
